A DIY clay keepsake of your little one's handprint or footprint
To celebrate the launch of our new collection, 'A Journey Together' we had a special event with Modeletto creating clay keepsakes. We put together a step-by-step guide to creating your very own keepsake at home.
What You’ll Need
- Air-dry clay (available at modeletto)
- Rolling pin
- A bowl or round cutter (for shaping)
- Toothpick or skewer (for making holes, if you plan to hang it)
- Non-toxic paint & sealant (available at modeletto)
- Ribbon or twine (if hanging)

1. Roll Out the Clay
Take a small portion of air-dry clay and roll it out on a flat surface to about 1 cm (0.4 inches) thick. You want it thick enough to hold the imprint without being too bulky.
2. Capture the Print
Gently press your baby’s hand or foot into the clay. Apply even pressure to capture all the little details! Extra tip: If your little one is wiggly, try this while they’re sleeping or relaxed in their high chair.
3. Shape Your Keepsake
Gently press your baby’s hand or foot into the clay. Apply even pressure to capture all the little details! Extra tip: If your little one is wiggly, try this while they’re sleeping or relaxed in their high chair.
4. Add Finishing Touches
- Use a toothpick or skewer to write their name or the date onto the clay
- If you want to hang the keepsake, poke a hole at the top for the ribbon.
5. Let It Dry
Leave the clay to air dry according to the instructions on the package (usually 24-48 hours). Flip it halfway through to ensure both sides dry evenly.
6. Decorate
Once dry, you can add sealer to the piece to keep the natural colour, or paint it and then add sealer.
7. Add the Ribbon
If you made a hole, thread a ribbon or twine through and tie a knot to create a hanging loop.
